My Scenic Adventure on the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail: A Mother’s Day Surprise

It was a perfect Mother’s Day morning when my family surprised me with something I didn’t know I needed: an adventure on the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail. I’ve had my fair share of flowers and brunches over the years, but this was different. This was an opportunity to combine fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and quality time with the people I love most.

The trail, stretching an impressive 18 miles along the California coast, is a haven for anyone looking to experience the natural beauty of the Monterey Bay area. It winds through the heart of Monterey and Pacific Grove, offering stunning views at every turn. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend the day.

Setting Off on the Trail

We started at the Fisherman’s Wharf, a vibrant area filled with the smell of salt water and the sounds of bustling tourists exploring local shops and eateries. It was early, so the morning mist still hung in the air, giving the entire place an ethereal feel. My husband rented bikes for all of us—an idea that instantly excited my two kids, who couldn’t wait to race each other.

The first stretch of the trail was magical. The ocean was a constant companion, the waves crashing rhythmically against the shore. Seagulls circled above, their calls blending with the distant sound of sea lions barking near the wharf. With every push of the pedals, I felt a sense of peace and freedom washing over me

A Quick Stop at Cannery Row

Our first stop was Cannery Row, a historic part of Monterey that’s now filled with eclectic stores, cafes, and galleries. We parked our bikes and wandered through the area, soaking in the charm. The kids were fascinated by the window displays in the candy shop, while I couldn’t resist stepping into a small boutique selling handmade jewelry

Cannery Row also gave us a chance to learn a bit of history. My husband told the kids about how this area used to be the center of the sardine canning industry decades ago. As I watched them listen intently, I felt grateful for moments like these—when we could blend fun with a little education.

The Ocean Views of Lovers Point

From Cannery Row, the trail led us to Lovers Point Park. This spot was easily one of the highlights of the day. The park is perched right on the water, offering panoramic views of the bay. We decided to take a break here, laying out a small picnic on the grass.

As we munched on sandwiches and fruit, I took a moment to soak in the beauty around me. The water sparkled under the sunlight, and kayakers paddled lazily in the distance. My kids ran off to explore the rocky shoreline, collecting shells and pointing out starfish in the tide pools. It was one of those rare moments where time seemed to slow down, and all the little worries of daily life felt a million miles away.

Sea Life Encounters

One of the most thrilling parts of the day was the unexpected wildlife encounters along the trail. As we pedaled further, we spotted a group of sea otters floating, cracking open shells with their tiny paws. They seemed completely unbothered by our presence, and we stood there watching them for what felt like ages.

Further down the trail, we came across a harbor seal lounging on the rocks. My youngest was beside herself with excitement, calling it “the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!” Moments like these reminded me why I love spending time in nature—it has a way of making you feel connected to something much bigger than yourself.

The Iconic Bixby Creek Bridge (Well, Almost)

Though the Bixby Creek Bridge is farther south and not technically on the trail, we joked as a family about how this ride felt like our mini-version of a Big Sur adventure. The sweeping coastal views and dramatic cliffs along certain sections of the trail gave us a taste of that iconic Pacific Coast Highway magic, without the long drive.

A Meaningful Pause at Asilomar State Beach

As we neared Asilomar State Beach, the scenery shifted slightly. The rugged coastline and windswept dunes gave the area a more raw, untouched beauty. We parked our bikes again to walk along the sandy path. The kids ran ahead, their laughter carried by the ocean breeze, while my husband and I strolled hand in hand.

This part of the day felt particularly meaningful to me. As a mother, life often feels like a whirlwind of schedules, commitments, and responsibilities. But here, walking alongside my family with nothing but the sound of the waves, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. It was a reminder of how important it is to pause and appreciate these simple, beautiful moments.

The Final Stretch

The last section of our ride was quieter, as we moved away from the more populated areas. The path became lined with wildflowers, their vibrant colors adding a cheerful touch to the landscape. By this point, the kids were starting to tire, but they pressed on, motivated by the promise of ice cream at the end of the trail.

We finished our ride at the Marina State Beach. The kids flopped onto the sand, exhausted but happy, while my husband and I took a moment to reflect on the day. Looking out at the endless stretch of ocean, I felt a profound sense of contentment. This was the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day—not with elaborate gestures, but with a simple, heartfelt experience that brought us closer together.

What This Adventure Taught Me

This day wasn’t just about exploring a beautiful trail; it was about reconnecting—with nature, with my family, and withmyself. It reminded me that sometimes the best experiences are the ones that don’t involve elaborate plans or fancy dinners. Instead, it’s the quiet moments, the unexpected detours, and the shared laughter that truly make a day special.

The Monterey Bay Coastal Trail gave us an opportunity to slow down and just appreciate the beauty of the world, and forthat, I’ll always be grateful. If you’re ever in the area, I can’t recommend this trail enough. It’s more than just a bike ride—it’s a journey that will stay with you long after the day is over

On this Mother’s Day, I didn’t just receive a gift. I received a memory, one I’ll treasure forever. And if you’re looking for a way to celebrate someone you love—or even just yourself—I can’t think of a better place to start than a scenic adventure like this.
