Hiking Trails in California That Every Adventurous Dad Should Explore

As a dad who loves adventure and the outdoors, California has always been my favorite place to explore. This state is an absolute treasure for nature lovers, with trails that take you from rugged coastal cliffs to towering mountains and peaceful deserts. Over the years, I’ve hiked more trails than I can count, and I’ve put together a list of my all-time favorites. Whether you’re a fellow dad looking to unplug, soak in some fresh air, or just break a sweat, these are the trails I think you’ll love.1. Mist Trail – Yosemite National Park

  • Why it’s worth it: This trail delivers waterfalls, stunning views, and just the right amount of challenge. You’ll climb alongside the roaring Vernal and Nevada Falls, feeling the spray on your face as you ascend the steep granite steps.
  • What to bring: Good hiking boots with grip, a rain jacket (you will get wet), and plenty of water.
  • Dad tip: Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds and catch the sunrise lighting up the falls. It’s a magical experience.

2. Lost Coast Trail – Shelter Cove

  • Why it’s worth it: Imagine hiking along California’s rugged, untouched coastline. The Lost Coast Trail feels like stepping into another world, with black sand beaches, tide pools, and dramatic cliffs. It’s a longer, multi-day hike, but trust me, it’s worth the effort.
  • What to bring: A sturdy backpack, camping gear, and a tide chart (tides can make or break your hike here).
  • Dad tip: Make sure to pack extra socks. Wet feet are unavoidable, but dry socks will save the day.

3. Mount Baldy (Mt. San Antonio) – Angeles National Forest

  • Why it’s worth it: If you’re craving a summit challenge, Mount Baldy is your trail. It’s the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains and offers panoramic views that make the sweat and sore legs totally worth it.
  • What to bring: Layers (it gets windy and cold at the top), trekking poles, and plenty of snacks for energy.
  • Dad tip: Take the Devil’s Backbone Trail if you’re feeling adventurous, but be cautious—it’s narrow with steep drop-offs.

4. Panorama Trail – Yosemite National Park

  • Why it’s worth it: This trail lives up to its name, offering sweeping views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and multiple waterfalls. At 8.5 miles, it’s a solid day hike that packs in a variety of landscapes.
  • What to bring: A camera or smartphone—you’ll want to capture these views.
  • Dad tip: Start at Glacier Point and hike down to the valley floor. It’s easier on the knees and gives you the best views.

5. Fern Canyon – Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park

  • Why it’s worth it: Think Jurassic Park vibes. Fern Canyon is a lush, green paradise where the canyon walls are covered in ferns. It’s a relatively easy hike, making it perfect for bringing the kids along if they share your love for adventure.
  • What to bring: Waterproof shoes or sandals—you’ll be crossing streams.
  • Dad tip: Go during summer for easier access or early fall for fewer crowds.

6. Mount Whitney Trail – Inyo National Forest

  • Why it’s worth it: At 14,505 feet, Mount Whitney is the tallest peak in the contiguous U.S., and summiting it is a badge of honor for any hiking dad. The 22-mile round trip is grueling but incredibly rewarding.
  • What to bring: A permit (required), high-altitude snacks, and plenty of water.
  • Dad tip: Acclimate to the altitude if you’re not used to it. Spend a night at Whitney Portal before your hike to avoid altitude sickness.

7. Point Reyes Lighthouse Trail – Point Reyes National Seashore

  • Why it’s worth it: This is less about the hike and more about the destination. The trail leads to the iconic Point Reyes Lighthouse, perched on a cliff with breathtaking ocean views. On clear days, you can spot whales in the distance.
  • What to bring: Binoculars for whale watching, a windbreaker, and your curiosity.
  • Dad tip: Go during the week to avoid weekend crowds and take your time soaking in the views.

8. Joshua Tree’s Hidden Valley Trail

  • Why it’s worth it: This short, one-mile loop is packed with unique desert scenery, making it good for a quick but memorable hike. You’ll see towering rock formations, twisted Joshua trees, and maybe even a lizard or two.
  • What to bring: Sunscreen, plenty of water, and a sense of adventure.
  • Dad tip: Bring the kids along—it’s an easy hike and perfect for introducing them to desert landscapes.

9. Lake Tahoe’s Rubicon Trail

  • Why it’s worth it: This trail hugs the shoreline of Lake Tahoe, offering turquoise water views that rival anything you’d see in the Caribbean. The trail is relatively flat, making it a relaxing yet scenic adventure.
  • What to bring: A swimsuit if you fancy a dip, sunglasses, and a picnic lunch.
  • Dad tip: Take breaks to enjoy the views and maybe even skip a rock or two with your kids.

10. Big Basin Redwoods’ Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail

  • Why it’s worth it: This legendary 30-mile trail winds through majestic redwoods and finishes with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s a challenge, but if you’re into diverse scenery, this hike has it all.
  • What to bring: Pack light for the long journey—think trail snacks, sturdy gear, and a good attitude to keep you going.
  • Pro tip: Break the hike into sections if possible. It’s a big adventure, but dividing it up makes it way more doable (and enjoyable).
