DIY Holiday Projects to Do with Your Kids this Winter

Winter is one of my favorite seasons, not just because of the cozy sweaters and hot cocoa, but because it's the perfect time to bond with my kids through fun and creative DIY holiday projects. There’s just something magical about sitting around the table, crafting together while snow gently falls outside the window. If you’re looking for ways to keep your kids entertained and create lasting memories, here are some of our favorite DIY holiday projects you can try this winter. Trust me, they’re simple, budget-friendly, and guaranteed to bring holiday cheer to your home!

1. Hand-Painted Ornaments

Every year, we make it a tradition to create new ornaments for our Christmas tree. All you need are some plain plastic or glass ornaments, acrylic paints, and brushes. Let your kids go wild with their creativity—polka dots, stripes, snowmen, or even handprint designs. Not only are these ornaments a cherished keepsake, but they also make wonderful gifts for grandparents!

2. Cookie Cutter Bird Feeders

This project is a hit because it’s not only fun but also teaches kids about caring for animals in the winter months. Mix birdseed with gelatin and a bit of water, pour the mixture into cookie cutters, and let it set. Once hardened, add a string to hang them from trees. Watching birds visit the feeders is such a joy for the kids (and me too!).

3. DIY Snow Globes

Homemade snow globes are always a crowd-pleaser. Grab some old mason jars, waterproof glue, glitter, and small figurines (think toy trees or animals). Glue your figurines to the inside of the jar lid, fill the jar with water and glitter, then seal it shut. Give it a shake, and voilà—a sparkly winter wonderland in a jar!

4. Salt Dough Handprint Ornaments

This one is perfect for capturing memories. Make a batch of salt dough with flour, salt, and water, and then have your kids press their hands into it. Use cookie cutters to create shapes around the handprints, and don’t forget to poke a hole for hanging. Once baked and cooled, your kids can paint them however they like.

5. Holiday Cards for Friends and Family

There’s something so special about receiving a handmade card during the holidays. Set out colored paper, markers, stickers, and stamps, and let your kids craft their own holiday greetings. It’s a heartwarming way to teach them about spreading joy and love.

6. Pinecone Christmas Trees

If you live near a park or forest, take a quick nature walk to collect some pinecones. Once home, you can paint them green, add tiny pom-poms as ornaments, and use a star sticker on top. These mini Christmas trees make adorable decorations for tabletops or windowsills.

7. Paper Snowflakes

This is an oldie but a goodie! Armed with some white paper and scissors, my kids and I love cutting out intricate snowflake designs. We hang them from the ceiling with fishing line to create a winter wonderland vibe in our living room.

8. Holiday Scented Playdough

Kids love playdough, and making your own scented version is surprisingly easy. Add seasonal scents like cinnamon, peppermint, or vanilla to your homemade playdough recipe. Your kids can mold their own snowmen, candy canes, or even pretend cookies!

What I love most about these projects is the time we spend laughing, creating, and just being together. Sure, some days the house ends up looking like a glitter explosion, but it’s always worth it for those moments of connection. Plus, these crafts give my kids a sense of accomplishment and pride in seeing their creations displayed around the house.

So, break out the craft supplies, put on some holiday music, and dive into one (or all) of these projects. Winter might be cold outside, but these activities will warm your hearts—and your home. Happy crafting!
