December is one of my favorite times of the year, and there's nothing quite like planning an unforgettable adventure with my kids. As a dad, I’m always looking for opportunities to create memories that will stick with them forever. And let’s be honest, it’s also my way of sneaking in some quality bonding time that doesn’t involve screens or homework. Over the years, we’ve had some amazing dad-and-kids December adventures, and I want to share a few of the top destinations that are perfect for making memories while embracing the holiday season.
1. Lapland, Finland – A Winter Wonderland
A few years ago, I decided to surprise my kids with a trip to Lapland, Finland. If you’ve ever wanted to step inside a real-life snow globe, this is the place. The highlight of the trip? Meeting Santa Claus himself at the Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi. My kids were wide-eyed with wonder as they chatted with the “real” Santa, and seeing their faces light up was a moment I’ll never forget.
But Lapland isn’t just about Santa. We also went on a husky sled ride through the snow-covered wilderness, which quickly became one of the most exhilarating experiences of our trip. Watching my kids laugh as the dogs enthusiastically pulled the sled made me realize just how magical the simple joys of nature can be. And let’s not forget the Northern Lights – it felt like the universe was putting on a private light show just for us.
2. Orlando, Florida – Theme Park Heaven
When my kids were younger, there was nothing more exciting to them than the idea of visiting theme parks, and I knew Orlando would be a hit. December is a great time to go because the parks are decked out in holiday decorations, making them even more magical.
We spent time at Disney World, where we saw the Cinderella Castle transformed into a shimmering ice palace. And then there was Universal Studios’ holiday celebrations, complete with a Grinchmas show that had my kids laughing hysterically. One of the best parts of Orlando in December is that the weather is just right – warm enough to enjoy but not the sweltering heat of summer.
Of course, these theme parks are thrilling, but what I loved most was the shared excitement of experiencing the rides, parades, and characters together. It’s hard to beat the joy of seeing your kids’ faces light up as they meet their favorite characters in person.
3. New York City – Holiday Magic in the Big Apple
One December, we decided to trade snow-covered forests for the bustling energy of New York City. The Big Apple has a way of making the holiday season feel larger-than-life, and my kids were mesmerized by the city’s electric atmosphere.
We started with a visit to Rockefeller Center to see the famous Christmas tree. Standing beneath its twinkling lights, surrounded by the city’s iconic skyscrapers, felt like being inside a holiday movie. Ice skating at the rink was a must, and while none of us were particularly graceful, the laughter and occasional tumbles made it all the more fun.
Another highlight was visiting the holiday markets, especially the one at Bryant Park. My kids loved the variety of treats, from hot chocolate to freshly baked cookies, and I couldn’t resist picking out a few unique ornaments to bring home. To top it off, we watched the Rockettes perform their Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall – a show that left us in awe.
4. Yellowstone National Park – A Winter Adventure
For a more rugged December getaway, Yellowstone National Park is incredible. One year, I decided to switch gears and take my kids on a wild adventure in the snow. We went snowshoeing, spotted wildlife like bison and elk, and even took a guided snowmobile tour. The landscape was breathtaking, especially with everything blanketed in snow.
What I cherished most about this trip was the quiet moments. Sitting by a crackling fire in our cozy lodge, talking about the day’s adventures, and watching the snow fall outside was pure magic. It reminded me that sometimes, the best memories come from simply being present.
5. Home – A DIY Staycation Adventure
Not every December adventure has to involve travel. Some of the best memories I’ve made with my kids have been at home during the holiday season. One year, we turned our house into a “holiday camp,” complete with a hot chocolate bar, a DIY gingerbread house competition, and a backyard “Santa hunt,” where I dressed up as the big man himself.
We also had a movie marathon with all the holiday classics and even camped out in the living room under string lights pretending they were stars. The beauty of a staycation is that it’s all about creativity, and it allows for quality time without the stress of packing or airports.
Final Thoughts
Whether it’s exploring a winter wonderland in Lapland, hitting the rides in Orlando, or simply creating magic at home, the most important thing is spending time together. These adventures are about more than the destination – they’re about the laughter, the shared moments, and the memories that will last a lifetime. As a dad, I’ve learned that December is the perfect time to pause, embrace the season, and make those moments count with my kids. Where will your next adventure take you?
